IEB is historically involved with community issues in Brazil. The workshops on community forest management began in 1998, and led to the creation of a working group – the GT-MFC – composed of 22 institutions, including NGOs, government and other organizations that represent and support social movements.
In 2001, the Institute bolstered its involvement in this area by inaugurating PADIS (Institutional and Sustainable Development Support Program), designed to strengthen civil society and government organizations so that they can work together toward sustainable development. Between 2001 and 2005, Padis supported 14 projects throughout the North, Northeast, Southeast and Central-West regions of Brazil.
In October of 2003, IEB launched the ALFA Consortium (Alliance for the Amazon and Atlantic Forests), with activities in the areas of forest management, communities and markets, and landscape design and monitoring. IEB’s work in this sector was reinforced in 2006, with the approval of two consortia: the Fortis Consortium, which promotes institutional strengthening in Southern Amazonas, and the Indigenous Landscapes Consortium, which will focus on strengthening indigenous communities in Roraima, Amapá and Rondônia.
Starting in 2000, the institute began organizing and publishing titles of socio-environmental relevance that would probably otherwise not be published and distributed.
