Standing Forest Project (Forest Management)

The Standing Forest Project, financed by the French Global Environment Fund (FFEM), began its activities in 2007, working in the region of Santarém, PA. The project proponent is the Brazilian Institute for Environment and Renewable Resources (Ibama), in partnership with the following Brazilian and French institutions: Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), IEB, Centre International en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement (CIRAD), and Groupe de Recherche et d’Echanges Technologiques (GRET). The project’s main objective is to improve the management of forest resources in the Amazon, so contributing to ecosystem preservation and the maintenance of carbon stocks, as well as increasing income from forest products for local populations. In order to achieve this, the project is divided into two specific objectives: (i) To promote partnerships between commercial enterprises and communities for improved management of forest stands; and (ii) To disseminate exemplary partnership practices, integrating them to public forest policies.

IEB’s role in achieving the project’s objectives is divided into four macro-activities: (i) Establish a local debating Forum; (ii) Strengthen the capacity of community organizations and enterprises in organizational and decision-making issues; (iii) Organize events focused on the theme of certification; and (iv) Monitor the organizational processes.
